So very proud and humbled to accept the Cape Breton Music Industry Hall of Fame Award on behalf of The Rankin Family last night at Centre 200 in Sydney.
Heather and I were honoured to stand up there for the whole crew — to celebrate where we came from, the music we made together, and the incredible support we’ve had over the years from the people of Cape Breton and beyond.
Thank you to the Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative for this recognition. It means a lot.
Ahhh....a wee reel or two in heaven this night along with a tap of the foot!! You are ALL thought of this night!!
Congratulations to the Rankin Family for being inducted into the Cape Breton Music Hall of Fame Tonight.
For the longest time, I never shared this before in the public that I’m a cousin (on my mother side) of the Rankins. My grandmother Alexandra (Sandra), my great aunts Catherine-Marcella (Marcy), Anita (Mary-Ann) & my great uncle Francis Xavier (FX) were all born in Mabou as part of Finlays clan in Cape Breton.
For a long time it wasn’t close relationship growing up (some may say if your relatives you must of been close) but I know why it wasn’t because of course they were on tour around the country. I was three years old when John-Morris passed away & was about fifthteen when Raylene passed away but I do miss them to this day. I remember one time in middle school my social studies teacher put on Rankin family in class and I said mention that they were my relatives and the teacher was like “really”.
Recently I saw Heather four weeks ago in Celtic Fest. I was excited & nervous, because it was the first time I got to see one of them perform in front the crowd but after the show meeting her, she was incredibly nice. We had a conversation I introduced myself and mentioned my great uncle FX Rankin & my grandmother Sandra. After the talk she said “see you cuz” I chuckle and she recognize my laugh like John-Francis (who is the grandson of my Great Uncle FX)
It’s been to long since I made this comment, because I was afraid of if people will react to this, but I’m making now because I’m coming into the entertainment world & I didn’t want to feel that shyness growing up or letting fear of meeting people & socialize overshadow me.
I want to say congratulations to Jimmy, Heather & Cookie for being inducted. I’m very proud of you, I have always been proud of you. John & Raylene will always be with you 💙👏🏻
Hey, Jimmy. I've got a musical family down here in Philly that are cousins to you guys with quite a few physical similarities. A Rankin grandson and 2 great granddaughters.
The Rankin Family was the soundtrack of my undergrad at Cape Breton University. Many student papers were laid out to the tunes of your first album! So happy to hear of this recognition!
Such a well deserved honor. To be recognized in such a way is a testament to the fact that The Rankin Family, and later, you Jimmy as a solo act, put Cape Breton on music's world stage. That was after John Morris had proven to be on of Cape Breton's greatest fiddlers.
Be very proud.
Congratulations to the Rankin Family for becoming Members of the great music industry Hall of Famers in Cape Breton. Congratulations to all of you. It's great that Heather and Jimmy Rankin were there to accept their honor.
